A man has died after being swept out to sea near Timaru, with a child being pulled alive from the water. The alarm was raised at 4.30pm, with emergency services finding a young child in the water at Seadown, north of Timaru, police said.

A surfer has been rescued from a beach south of Eastbourne, Wellington, and taken to hospital in a serious condition. A spokesman for Wellington Free Ambulance said the injured person had been flown to Wellington hospital, where they arrived at about 1.10pm.

A person has died after a small boat capsized in Wellington’s Days Bay on Sunday afternoon. The Police, Coastguard and Rescue Helicopter attended the scene. Initially, two people were being treated for injuries by Wellington Free Ambulance (WFA) staff. A police spokeswoman has since confirmed one person has died.
