94 lives lost to drowning in 2022. The most drowning deaths in a decade.

This 2022 total of 94 drowning deaths represents the largest annual drowning loss of life in the past decade. Tragically 15% higher than the 10 year average.

Just Wear It to save lives on the water this summer

In response to an increasing number of preventable drownings on watercraft in New Zealand, Coastguard and Water Safety New Zealand are pleading with Kiwis to wear lifejackets while on the water this summer.

90 preventable drownings, marking a concerning 10% increase over the 10-year average (82), and only a marginal reduction (4) from 2022's 94 preventable drownings. 83% were male and 58% were over the age of 45.
