So you think we can swim?
In 2008, just one in five 10-year-olds can swim 200m – the
benchmark Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) considers necessary to
swim and survive in the water. Other lesser measurements of
children’s swimming skills are down on average by 10% on comparable
data from 2001.

School Pool Closures Pose Threat to Being Water-wise

Matt Claridge, Water Safety New Zealand General Manager, appeared
on the TVNZ Breakfast show this morning.
More and more schools are closing their swimming pools because
they can't cover the cost of their maintenance. Water Safety New
Zealand's Matt Claridge is worried this will create a generation of
children who can't swim - a situation he says must change.

2008 Drowning Report
January 2009
There were a total of 96 drowning deaths in New Zealand in 2008.
Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) has officially announced the
annual drowning toll. It follows one of the highest holiday period
drowning tolls in recent time.
2008 is the second lowest annual toll since records began in
1980. In comparison to 10 years ago, there were 148 drowning deaths
in 1998.
